2020 READ-A-THON

by Adult Learning Center

The Adult Learning Center (ALC) provides necessary, direct services to individuals living and working in Baltimore who are experiencing low educational attainment, low-skill employment, low literacy, and low English proficiency. Each year the ALC serves ~500 learners through convenient class times, providing connections to support services throughout Baltimore City, and helping learners reach their full potential.

The everyday lives of our learners reveal the importance, and necessity of our work, as the ALC serves to empower and change the lives of the people who the courage and persistence to change their lives.

The ALC remains committed to improving adult basic skills is a key component of ensuring that adult learners are productive members of the community by meeting their educational, career, and personal goals. In order to both raise awareness for the work we do in Baltimore City and increase our capacity to continue our work through the pandemic, we would like to galvanize the collective bookworms of Baltimore City through a Read-A-Thon fundraiser!

From Aug. 17-Oct. 17, 2020, you can set your reading goal (in # of books) during this time and set your own fundraising goal to get friends and family members to sponsor you. All you have to do is commit to giving $25 to receive an ALC bookmark and create a peer-to-peer campaign by selecting “Fundraise With Us”.

If this sounds like too much work, you can just go ahead and donate to the Adult Learning Center to help us reach our goal or sponsor ALC staff to reach their reading goals by looking through the “View Fundraisers” button.

Your support of the ALC allows us to continue critical work in Baltimore City and will have a direct impact on the learners we serve.

  • $18 buys a calculator
  • $29 provides one hour of instructional time
  • $36 buys a textbook
  • $45 pays for a learner to take the GED exam
  • $100 buys a subscription to a computerized literacy program
  • $580 pays for a professional development session for our teachers and tutors

Our goal is to raise $3,000 to cover “back to school” costs of our learners. Will you help us reach our goal by joining the Read-A-Thon or sponsoring a participant?
